Curious Minds Wanna Know...
General
A LitKit is a creative technology kit that blends "paper and pixels." Each box contains physical art supplies, cool collectible (think posters, postcards, stencils and more), interactive zines, and a special access QR codes to unlock digital layers of media that play and pop right off the printed page(s).
The cool collectibles and immersive storytelling keep them engaged, while they learn about digital technology. How Does It Work?Your LitKit arrives in the mail, full of all the materials you need You use the QR code in the box to unlock the digital layer and LitKit software You explore and create things analog and digital
LitKit is designed for creative tweens, teens, and curious makers ages 13 and up—especially those who love to doodle, craft, build, or wonder how the internet actually works. No prior art or tech experience is needed! It’s built for youth who want to explore digital technology and internet history through a mix of analog and digital making. Beyond the fun of building, LitKit helps them develop the critical skills needed to navigate life on and offline today, preparing them for future careers in a technology-driven world.
Yes! While our kits are officially curated for ages 13+ because older youth deserve toolstailored to the specific digital platforms they navigate (think Snapchat and TikTok rather thanRoblox) - our "low-floor, high-ceiling" maker methodology allows for a wide spectrum oflearners.
Younger children and neurodivergent makers can easily explore, create, and build at their ownpace. A 9-year-old can have a fantastic, hands-on experience creating with a LitKit, thoughyounger kids may simply enjoy lighter guidance or co-creation with a parent or older sibling.
LitKits are intentionally designed around process, play, and ongoing discovery rather than a quick, one-and-done build. You won't finish a kit in a single sitting—and that’s by design!
While you can complete individual hands-on activities over a weekend, each kit is built to support a deeper journey. Throughout each 3-month cohort, we deliver fresh prompts, new digital asset asset drops, surprise creative challenges, and online learning opportunities. The kit evolves with your teen, keeping them inspired and creating over time.
They will learn core STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) concepts by actually building things. Instead of just learning how to code, they will understand the cultural history, systems thinking and design principles behind the technologies they use every day—like GIFs, augmented reality, emojis, and AI. They will walk away with deep digital literacy, critical thinking skills, and a portfolio of creative projects.
Here is how the specific hands-on activities inside this LitKit meet that gold standard:
● Hands-on Critical Thinking (The "STEM" Score): We don't just teach technology—we teach the logic behind it. In this kit, your teen will learn (e.g., what a dataset is and what it has to do with artificial intelligence) by physically building it from scratch.
● Active Making Over Passive Screentime: STEM.org highly values physical-to-digital integration. This kit is recognized for its unique "analog tactility" approach—meaning your teen spends more time constructing, drawing, and playing with physical materials than they do looking at a screen.
● Media Literacy & Design Skills: Technology is only as good as the stories we tell with it. This kit teaches teens how to use emerging creative tech responsibly, giving them a real-world edge in digital design, animation, and media literacy.
● No Code, No Barriers: STEM.org loves accessibility. Because our digital tools are completely no-code, any teen can pick up this kit and start creating high-level projects immediately, regardless of their past technical experience.
They are in great hands! LitKits are designed with a low barrier to entry and a very high ceiling for creativity. We provide all the materials, step-by-step videos, and structured creative prompts to get them started. It’s not about drawing a masterpiece; it’s about self-expression, experimentation and play.Read all about how our we use "collage concepts" and remixing to ensure no maker is left behind from the creative process, in our Remix Log post about.
That is exactly why we built LitKit. Our tools are entirely no-code. We focus on the design thinking and system-building behind technology, rather than typing lines of code. Your teen can jump straight into building complex, interactive digital media without having to learn a programming language first.
Most STEM kits on the market are "assembly-line" toys—your teen follows an instruction manual to build a robot that looks exactly like everyone else’s. Once it’s built, the learning stops.
LitKit is about creative self-expression. No two projects ever look or sound the same. We combine media arts, culture, history, and technology so your teen is building something uniquely theirs.
We completely understand the screen-time battle! Passive scrolling of social media can feel unproductive and isolating. LitKit turns screens from a consumer device into a creative tool. Because our kits require physical making—cutting, constructing, arranging, and touching real-world materials—their hands are actively engaged off-screen for the majority of the activities.Read about how our kits transform your smart device from tool of distraction to tool of discovery in our Remix Log post.
Because the best way to understand complex digital systems is to touch them. By physically holding, manipulating, and crafting a project before tackling creating them in the digital realm, teens build a stronger cognitive connection to how the technology works. We call this "analog tactility for digital literacy." Read about it in the Remix Log.
LitKits are designed by a team of award-winning artist-educators, archivists, and creative technologists who have spent over two decades running arts and technology workshops in schools, libraries, and community centers. Our work has been recognized globally, and our kits are ranked in the top 5% of global STEM products by STEM.org.
Absolutely! LitKits are a fantastic addition to homeschooling curricula, self-directed learning portfolios, or after-school enrichment. Because each kit includes rich historical context, standards/curriculum-aligned learning, and open-ended projects, it seamlessly covers media arts, technology, history, and science outcomes.
We are here to help! Every kit comes with an interactive instructional zine loaded with step-by-step video guides that walk them through the process. Our web experiences are designed to be intuitive and highly visual, ensuring a smooth, frustration-free path from start to finish. You can reach out to us anytime for support on your learning journey and creative process.
